36 Presentation time and seeing Lubaina Himid as well as Ben Wilson

 On Friday we had a chance to share our reviews/reflections and journey  of the first  term of the FAD for me it was useful and interesting both in creating the presentation and delivering - the actual 'performance' certainly was more than just reading it and fresh perspectives have emerged.

It was also a real revelation to hear about other course members ideas on their work and creativity.

I am now in a position where I have what I feel is quite a strong idea for the exhibition at the end of the course and the options that will work with it.

After the morning of presentations I made a break for Tate Modern as I had booked a ticket to see the Lubaina Himid exhibition.



The exhibition was interesting to me and I felt the connection in the work from Lubaina's set design work - the work I was most engaged by was 'A fashionable Marriage' partly I guess because of my interest in Hogarth (here it's Marriage a-la-mode: The Toilette)

On my way back home I saw Ben Wilson Sisyphus like toiling with his work on chewing gum, chatted with some people who were clearly also inspired by Ben.

Ben doesn't only work  on his 'Chewing Gum Art' when the weather's good.

Hals and Hogarth - Exhibition visits during the week.

 When I spoke with my Tutor she mentioned the value of being with others when visiting exhibitions and in the last week I was lucky to see 2 big name Artists along with friends who have an interest in the visual Arts. Not a Cavalier and Not Laughing   The first was to The Wallace Collection to see the Frans Hals exhibition which was good but perhaps rather ‘samey’ for me – much was made of his fine collection of blacks (in terms of varieties of the tint on his palette) but it was nice to see my friend  who has not ventured out too much during the lockdowns/Covid and who had suggested the venue. The second trip was to see the Hogarth at Tate Britain. Day 11 - a bit of colour

Colour is a complex matter, a science  as well as part of art. When we look at an area of colour it can be described as being made up of 3 variables  Light is a part of the electromagnetic spectrum that humans perceive (via Rods and Cones in their eyes) in a particular way. Numbers can be apportioned to give a defined colour via    Hue -  the attribute of a colour by virtue of which it is discernible as red, green, etc., and which is dependent on its dominant wavelength and independent of intensity or lightness Tone  - this  refers to the relative lightness or darkness of a colour. One colour can have an almost infinite number of different tones and  Saturation  refers to the intensity of a colour. 24 Another Career in art is presented by Libby Ashdown and some Friday fun with sketch book ideas..

 Career On Friday as part of 'Core' we were aging taken into the world of  an Artist and teacher this time it was  Elizabeth (Libby) Ashdown who teaches at various institutions including City Lit where she is teaching Textiles on the Foundation Art and Design classes. Libby spoke about how her Art education had brought her to working as a  Passementerie weaver which is an endangered craft, although the method of working the work produced is contemporary and non-representational.   An artist working in the discipline of a  Passementerie (sometimes known as Jewellery for the home)  is creating an ornamental edging or trimming, if you follow this link you can find out what is encompassed in this craft.
