Day 60 Core -'The Crit'

Image
It was an interesting experience to take part in a sort of impromptu exhibition of work within a CityLit Studio- the common theme being that we were on the same Foundation course did not to my mind create a theme and the 'Artists' had different approaches.   I had been working to the theme of an Alice in Wonderland experience in Kew Gardens and I am not sure how others experiencing what I had produced were judging this but I quite like the overall effect and (in my mind) had something of Marcel Duchamp's Étant donnés (in English: Given) - I'd like to see this work which I understand is in Philadelphia (USA). Here are some views of it being put together in the classroom. A blank canvas (only it wasn't canvas)     creating a sort of diorama almost there. It was good to review all the works as a group - I did feel that I was perhaps more literal and less oblique but hearing what others felt about the pieces was useful - I fear (as did others about their own work)  that

Day 54 Core with Heidi - putting work out there

Image
On Friday we had the great chance to hear from Heidi who as well as taking 'Fine Art' group is a practicing artist - Heidi spoke about projects she has worked on - it seems some of her big topics (for her) are Human Body and Maps. Blue Sky thinking? As well as explaining the projects there was a lot of useful stuff about applying to be eligible for funding and the logistics behind budgeting . One of Heidi's successful projects was 'Independent Free State'   Heidi also spoke about a very different project - this was where she showed flags on a control tower  at the Estuary Festival in 2016 - this is nicely documented here .

Day 53 Sculpture - Cement Fondu gets released

Image
In fact I was pleasantly surprised  The Ciment Fondu that began a couple of weeks ago and for me was a Breakfast type meal (original thought was for 7 deadly sins theme and here Gluttony) final after delicate chisel work was released and I had not expected to be pleased with the result but was. I think this might be something I try again - and am interested to see how colour might work here.  How it might be coloured - reminds me of some cafés in Japan where food is illustrated with models

Day 52 Vis Com, Bookends

Rod shows the book cover  There's quite a history of Art Books and Rod moved us towards the construction of our own book using material from the last weeks of his sessions. Simple cover and pages stitched together (not as easy as it sounds) - first version was quite random (which suited some people and their materials) - I was keen to make more of a narrative . I'm not sure how this project would have turned out if we'd been more aware of a possible outcome (a book about us?)   Sadly some trouble for me with the stapler which I wanted to use a a 'cheats' way forward.  Collateral Damage to stapler
