Day 37- Term 2 Specialism Vis Com
My images of objects |
12th January was first session and we looked at some techniques - ahead of the class we'd been asked to bring along some images of objects that meant something to us.
Rod spoke about how artists used signifiers in their work which carried meaning,
Ants=Death
Bread is associated with religion
Crutch = Death
Dali was identified as using symbolism and examples are Lobsters connecting with sexuality ands melting clocks unsurprisingly 'time'.
Other artists that were mentioned for motifs included Frida Kahlo (cats) and Anselm Kiefer the German artist who has used books made from lead.
Rod also mentioned how the pineapple motif had been used in architecture when such fruits were considered exotic in England and denoted wealth and largesse.
In terms of practical work we had the chance to investigate some techniques used by Marlene Dumas and Andy Warhol
Marlene Dumas has used paper that has been moistened and Warhol some smudged copying.
Dumas often uses portrait but here I worked from the image of a tree
And here is a representation of a cross with some paint resist
With the Warhol inspired 'blotted' method here's a triptych of the film used to transfer the tracing and the original
We also worked with traced collages of images
Traced onto paper without observing |
images traced and arranged |
The techniques and fresh vision that their use imparted was useful, it was good to have images that 'meant' something to me and I'm sure I will try these techniques more fully
