Day 42 - a group (The Cadmium Collective) looking at 'Coal Drops Yard'
Some of the brief can be seen alongside -
We decided to look at the area around coal drops yard which included a large open area and also part of the University of Arts London-
The day was a cold post Christmas weekday with the blow of Covid still very present and these effects did impact the four us in a group.
We met initially as three and then went of on individual researches and met up later (with an additional member) and spoke of our rather negative feelings about what we'd seen.
Industrial past |
A sign can help engage? |
The developers have not obliterated the past but perhaps have become too much a hostage to what has gone before - talking we felt that the area perhaps lacked some of what constitutes community.
There were clear breaks between the area that had been developed and the 'outside world' and we spoke about how there was a model for redeveloping -which involved artists and design but that this was perhaps a transition ahead of the area being handed on to commerce.
When we got back to CityLit we made a single sheet to capture what we felt as a group :-
Some points were(that we tried to visualise) a circus top bringing people in and a nod towards rave culture with our use of bright yellows.
Getting ready to lift the yellow tent canvas . |
And what's beneath
We used some silhouettes to show the crowd, we wanted a 'congregation' and recognised the area was a hub and perhaps circulation was involved - our sign paid homage to clubs and pointed towards the future.
It was a really nice experience to be able to show to our peers our vision and even though it had been a cold day I felt I got a lot from the 'group-working' and also a better understanding of the area along with ideas about the gentrification and commercialisation of 'run down' areas .
