Day 49 - Vis. Com & me in the frame (Yoshimi battles the pink robots)
Rod spent some time talking about applications to further study and the sort of work that would present well to those selecting students - insights were provided with previous students portfolios and sketch books - we also spoke about the next presentation that we'll make (via portfolio type sheets).
Following on from last week's virus-y theme Rod asked us to use images of ourselves being confronted by such things.
I managed to find a couple of images of myself on the web and printed these - one face and one not complete but fuller length.
I looked at the work from last week (the considered representations of viral battles) and set about putting these to work - the head shot came out as mainly 'Language is a virus' (a fine Laurie Anderson song).
Language being a virus, hand drawn text and collaged text |
My figure was presented as something of a 'retro' computer game where various missiles were bouncing around.
Help- missiles everywhere |
It's always interesting to see the rest of the group's work and also get feedback - Louis pointed out (which I'd forgotten) where I'd used similar device when we'd had a previous class -there's certainly something here of a space battle type thing going on.
Work with tape and string from October |
And I am thinking again musically Now) of the Flaming Lips - Yoshimi battles the pink robots
More Black background |
And orange-y |
Rod took our pictures away and did some 'strange magic' with a copier and we were able to work with these to reveal fresh angles - here are a couple.
I think that there could be some nice outcomes with more work but I'm think 'what's accidental here?' and what am in terms of a process?
Hopefully I'll find some time to take this further.

I felt that the work here helped me to consider a balance between an Idea and what came out by being open to some chance elements - some which could be successful and incorporated - as often the case with Vis Com I feel that what starts as being initially a struggle can produce unexpectedly satisfying results
